How GPA is Calculated – Step-by-Step Formula
Our GPA calculator uses the standard weighted average method on a 4.0 scale. Here's the transparent breakdown:
- Assign grade points to each letter grade (e.g., A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, etc.).
- For each course: Quality Points = Grade Points × Credits
Example: A (4.0) in a 3-credit course → 4.0 × 3 = 12.0 quality points - Sum all quality points across courses.
- Sum all credits.
- GPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credits
Example: 36 quality points over 12 credits → 3.00 GPA
This calculator updates instantly as you add or change courses – no buttons needed. If your school reports grades as raw percentages instead of letters, convert them first with our Percentage Calculator.

Tips to Improve Your GPA
- Prioritize higher-credit courses first — a strong grade in a 4-credit class moves your GPA more than the same grade in a 1-credit class.
- Retake or replace low grades where your school's policy allows grade replacement instead of grade averaging.
- Balance your course load each term so demanding classes don't all land in the same semester.
- Recalculate your cumulative GPA each semester using this tool so you always know how much room you have before finals.
